Controversy strikes as Lewandowski’s goal is disallowed in Barcelona’s 1-0 Loss to Real Sociedad

Barcelona lost 1-0 to Real Sociedad, with Lewandowski's disallowed goal and a lackluster performance, marking their first scoreless game of the season.

FC Barcelona, who are leading in the La Liga, suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Real Sociedad at Anoeta Stadium in San Sebastian on Sunday. The match saw a controversial moment when Robert Lewandowski’s goal was disallowed, leading to heated debate.

Barcelona thought they had taken the lead in the 13th minute when Lewandowski reacted quickly to a blocked shot and found the back of the net. However, after a VAR review, the goal was ruled offside. The technology showed Lewandowski’s boot was slightly offside, though many felt the decision was harsh, as it seemed Aguerd’s heel had been incorrectly considered as part of Lewandowski’s boot.

Barca’s Manager Hansi Flick was sure that the match officials were wrong on giving Lewa an offside. It was the wrong decision from the VAR. It’s a clear goal but we have to accept it. It was not our day today.” he told the media afterwards.

Real Sociedad takes advantage

Real Sociedad made the most of the situation and took the lead in the 33rd minute. Sheraldo Becker finished coolly into the net after Luka Sucic’s header set him up perfectly. Barcelona’s defense couldn’t stop the well-timed attack, and Real Sociedad’s 1-0 lead held up as the match progressed.

No Yamal, No party

Barcelona missed the spark of teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, who was out due to an ankle injury picked up during their midweek Champions League match. Without his creative energy, Barcelona struggled to break down Sociedad’s defense and lacked the attacking drive they’ve been known for this season.

Coach Hansi Flick made changes at the start of the second half, bringing on Dani Olmo for Frenkie de Jong. But Barcelona continued to struggle. Sociedad had a couple of chances to double their lead, with Becker firing wide and Ander Barrenetxea also missing a tight-angle shot. Despite the changes, Barcelona failed to create enough danger or find an equalizer.

A tough night for Barcelona

Despite scoring freely this season, Barcelona failed to get on the scoresheet in this match for the first time in all competitions. Real Sociedad’s defence stood strong, and Barcelona’s offensive play was far below its usual high standards.

This loss leaves Barcelona six points behind second-place Real Madrid, though they have played an extra match. It was their second defeat of the season, and it’s clear that coach Flick and the players will need to regroup and improve if they want to stay in the La Liga title race.
