Uncapped players Nathan McSweeney and Josh Inglis make Australia’s Test squad for India series

As the series unfolds, Australia will look to blend experience with fresh talent, while McSweeney and Inglis hope to make a lasting impact on their Test debuts.

Australia has unveiled a strong 13-player squad for the highly anticipated opening Test match against India, set to be held in Perth. In a surprising move, selectors included two uncapped players, Nathan McSweeney and Josh Inglis, for the ICC World Test Championship clash beginning on November 22. The series opener marks the first of five crucial matches for both teams, who currently hold the top two positions in the Championship standings.

Nathan McSweeney Earns Opening Spot

Nathan McSweeney, who impressed during Australia A’s recent tour against India A, seems set to open alongside Usman Khawaja. His selection came with a significant endorsement from former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, who praised McSweeney’s technique and temperament in an episode of The ICC Review. This selection offers the young batter a golden opportunity to prove his mettle on the big stage, and his recent form supports his potential to succeed.

Australian chairman of selectors George Bailey expressed his confidence in McSweeney’s readiness, saying, “Nathan has displayed the attributes we believe will equip him well for Test cricket along with a strong recent record in domestic cricket.”

Josh Inglis: The Surprise Inclusion

Josh Inglis, a star in Australia’s white-ball format, made a surprise entry to the squad. Known for his versatility and sharp glove work, Inglis has also been in exceptional form in the Sheffield Shield, which likely contributed to his selection. Despite being uncapped in Test cricket, his experience across formats adds depth to Australia’s bench strength.

Bailey praised Inglis, saying, “Josh has been in great touch in the Sheffield Shield competition and deserves his place in his first Test squad.”

Core Players and Expected Line-up: India vs Australia

In the batting order, Steve Smith is likely to settle back into his traditional No.4 slot, following Marnus Labuschagne. Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, and wicketkeeper Alex Carey are expected to form the middle order, creating a well-rounded lineup. Pat Cummins will lead the squad, supported by Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Scott Boland, who was named as the back-up pacer. Nathan Lyon stands as Australia’s premier spinner.

Australia’s path to World Test Championship Final

With Australia and India firmly positioned at the top of the World Test Championship table, this five-match series carries significant weight. Both teams have their sights on the final, making each Test a crucial stepping stone. Bailey spoke optimistically about the squad, saying, “The squad is balanced and provides Andrew and Pat the options required for what shapes as a captivating series.”
