Mohammad Nabi to retire from ODIs after ICC Champions Trophy

Nabi made his ODI debut in 2009. The all-rounder is Afghanistan's 2nd highest wicket-taker and run-scorer in the format.

Afghanistan legend Mohammad Nabi will retire from ODI cricket after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The all-rounder has been representing his nation in the 50-over format for the last 15 years and has decided he’ll call time on his ODI career next year.

Nabi bids ODIs goodbye

Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) chief executive Naseeb Khan has revealed that Nabi informed him about the decision, and they accepted. Nabi would continue to play T20I cricket for Afghanistan and might even target the 2026 T20 World Cup after retiring from the longest format, Test cricket, in 2019.

“Yes, Nabi is retiring from ODIs after the Champions Trophy and he informed the board about his desire. He told me few months back that he wants to end his ODI career after the Champions Trophy and we welcome his decision. After the Champions Trophy, what I understand is that, he is expected to continue his T20 career, and that is the plan until now,” Naseeb told Cricbuzz.

Nabi’s legacy

One can make the argument that no single player in their history has carried their nation as Nabi did for Afghanistan. He’s taken them from playing Fiji, Maldives, and Japan to having wins over England and Pakistan in the ODI World Cup. The all-rounder also holds the record for being involved in victories against the most number of teams (45).

However, now that the team’s developed, he’s decided it’s time to leave. Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi and coach Jonathan Trott have done exemplary work over the last couple of years and Nabi would be certain they’ll take the team even forward.
