“Gautam Gambhir has scored lot more..”: Gavaskar takes subtle dig at India’s support staff

Gautam Gambhir, Abhishek Nayar and Ryan Ten Doeschate have had a rough time with Team India, losing IND vs SL ODI series, and then IND vs NZ Tests.

Even though Team India’s 0-3 rout in home Test series vs New Zealand might have been a one-off failure for the team, but that has certainly given the license to the ex-players to speak their mind. That has brought under scanner, the role of the support staff – coach Gautam Gambhir, his deputies Abhishek Nayar, and Ryan Ten Doeschate.

What are Abhishek Nayar & Ryan Ten Doeschate’s Roles?

During an interaction with Sports Tak, Sunil Gavaskar showed his bewilderment at the current coaching setup of the Indian team. He also went on to point about the confusion regarding the roles of Nayar and Ten Doeschate. Upon being told that the duo doubled up as assistant and batting coaches, Gavaskar could not even hold back his laughter.

In fact, he even urged Gautam Gambhir to take up the responsibility of this team solely, as he has the experience of playing there. “For batting…what is the role of Abhishek Nayar in the team? Is he a batting coach or an assistant coach? Gambhir has scored a lot more runs than the two, so if he can step in and guide the players on how to bat in Australian conditions and the type of approach they should take, then we can probably perform better,” Gavaskar said.

“The honeymoon period for Gautam Gambhir has ended. We tend to forgive the mistakes made during this period, but we now want him to step in and guide the players properly in the tour of Australia,” he added.

Gautam Gambhir Needs to Show Way in IND vs AUS

Throughout the IND vs NZ series, there were some decisions that left the experts speechless. One of the foremost things was, India going ahead with turning tracks, that brought about their downfall. Another such decision was, the demotion of Sarfaraz Khan in the batting order, in the Mumbai Test, where even Washington Sundar batted ahead of him.

It is important to note that the first IND vs AUS Test starts on November 22 in Perth and Rohit Sharma will not be available for the match. So that means added pressure for the Indian batting unit that was miserable in the IND vs NZ series.
