‘Team’ Punjab Kings need to ace it in IPL 2025 auction, retaining finisher & impact player not enough

Punjab Kings (PBKS) have the most work to do in IPL 2025 auction after retaining just two uncapped players as they aim to hit the reset button

Punjab Kings find themselves in a rather precarious position ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. In a desperate attempt to hit the reset button in their hunt for a maiden IPL trophy, PBKS have opted to retain just two uncapped players – Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh. The team will enter the auction with a highest purse of Rs 110.5 cr. But that also means that the team has the most work to do.

PBKS have the most work to do in IPL 2025 auction

Shashank Singh was picked “wrongly” by PBKS in the mini-auction but turned out to be quite the revelation for the side in IPL 2024. His performances in the middle-order gave PBKS the confidence to retain the star despite not being their first-choice initially. Prabhsimran Singh, who has been a regular in PBKS’ playing XI over the recent years found himself handed a new role in IPL 2024. He played majority of his innings as an ‘impact player’. With that being said, PBKS have a lot of work to do – right from finding a captain to making sure they get the composition of each department right.

PBKS need a new captain

PBKS will be on the hunt for a new captain after releasing Sam Curran ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. The team has the liberty to bid for talents like Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant at the auction table. Given that PBKS enter the auction with the highest purse money, it won’t come as a surprise if they break the bank to get a formidable captain.

A void of batters that needs to be filled

PBKS have released Liam Livingstone, Jonny Bairstow, Ashutosh Sharma, Jitesh Sharma and other batters. This means the side would have to recruit a good number of batters in the IPL 2025 auction. And here’s the catch. PBKS have a plethora of talent to choose from but they must make wise choices. Ricky Ponting, who replaced Bayliss as the head coach earlier this year, is expected to lead the team’s strategy planning for the auction.

PBKS have to start from scratch in bowling department

The PBKS bowling line-up comprised the likes of Arshdeep Singh, Sam Curran and Kagiso Rabada. However, none of them have been retained ahead of IPL 2025 auction. This means the team would have the additional burden of investing heavily on bowlers as well, apart from adding batters to their squad. The team is expected to be the side with most buys at the auction, given that they have to rebuild an entire side.
