Punjab Kings (PBKS) have unveiled their retention list for the 2025 IPL season, surprising fans with two retentions, that too uncapped players, Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh . Without a captain last season, the team is now looking for a new leader to guide them. Surprisingly, the team didn’t go for their marquee players like Arshdeep Singh and Kagiso Rabada, both of the top pacers will go to the mega auction this year.
With Australian coaching legend Ricky Ponting stepping in, PBKS is undergoing a significant revamp under fresh management, aiming to build a well-balanced squad and a strong foundation as they continue their 17-season-long hunt for a maiden trophy.
Talented uncapped players, such as Ashutosh Sharma, who impressed last season, have been released, and no English players—including stars like Sam Curran and Liam Livingstone, were retained.
Shashank and Prabhsimran in IPL 2024
In IPL 2024, Shashank and Prabhsimran emerged as Punjab Kings’ top scorers, with 354 and 334 runs respectively. Despite the team finishing ninth out of ten, these two batters delivered a season highlight by leading a record-breaking chase of 262 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens.
PBKS goes for playoff push
Punjab Kings (PBKS) have struggled to make the IPL playoffs since 2014. To change their fortunes in the 2025 season, they roped in Ponting. PBKS fans are hopeful that these changes will finally steer the team toward a successful campaign.
