Aaqib Javed not in running for Pakistan white-ball coach role, likely to head NCA: Sources

In the coming days, the PCB is expected to finalise its leadership structure, with the anticipated announcement of Aaqib Javed’s position at the NCA and other senior roles.

Former Pakistan pacer and senior national selector Aaqib Javed is not a contender for the vacant role of Pakistan’s white-ball head coach, sources suggest. Instead, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) may appoint him as the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore. This move comes as the PCB looks to shake up its leadership amid internal shifts and an urgent need for a new white-ball head coach.

Gary Kirsten resignation and Interim Coaching Role

The departure of South African Gary Kirsten, who famously led India to victory in the 2011 World Cup, has left a void in the coaching staff. Kirsten’s resignation reportedly followed a disagreement with the PCB.

In response, the PCB has appointed Jason Gillespie, the current Test team head coach, to oversee the white-ball squad on an interim basis for the upcoming tour of Australia.

Aaqib Javed role: Focus on Youth Development

Rumours circulated that Aaqib Javed, a well-regarded former fast bowler, might step in as the white-ball coach. However, a PCB source has revealed Aaqib’s preference for working on a developmental project with a focus on nurturing young talent. “The PCB contemplated appointing Aaqib as head coach of the white-ball squad after the resignation of Gary Kirsten, but he’s now more likely to accept the post of the National Cricket Academy in Lahore,” stated the source to PTI.

PCB potential structural changes

Sources indicate that PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi is expected to announce a series of leadership changes in the coming days. One proposed change includes moving former Test spinner Nadeem Khan, currently the Director of the NCA, to head the international cricket department. Aaqib Javed is then likely to assume the role of head of the NCA.

With multiple limited-overs tours on the horizon, including visits to Zimbabwe and South Africa following the Australia series, the PCB will soon need to confirm a permanent white-ball head coach. However, given Aaqib’s experience and inclination towards youth development, the NCA position appears a natural fit.

Nadeem Khan expected move to International Cricket

The source noted that PCB Chairman Naqvi sees former cricketers as best suited for roles that impact international cricket strategy. Nadeem Khan’s extensive experience as a former Test player is viewed as a valuable asset for the international cricket department, making him a strong candidate to replace Usman Wahla in this role.

“The PCB chairman was not satisfied with the performance of the current head of international cricket, Usman Wahla, who could be made Pakistan Super League (PSL) head,” the source added.

Usman Wahla potential move to PSL

Usman Wahla, who currently oversees international cricket, may soon head the PSL. His experience as a permanent PCB employee and his political connections may be seen as advantageous for a role that involves coordination with local and foreign leagues.

“There have also been issues between some players and Wahla over NOCs for foreign leagues and central contracts,” the source explained. Wahla’s experience and relationships within the PCB may benefit the PSL, where managing player contracts and league negotiations is essential.

Restructured PCB Leadership in Pipeline

In the coming days, the PCB is expected to finalise its leadership structure, with the anticipated announcement of Aaqib Javed’s position at the NCA and other senior roles. The Board is prioritising appointments that leverage the experience of former cricketers in shaping Pakistan’s cricket strategy at the national and international levels.
