Not many available captains can force KKR to retain Shreyas Iyer in IPL 2025

Kolkata Knight Riders are likely to retain Shreyas Iyer as captain for a price of 18 crores

Just 24 hours remain before the submission of the IPL 2025 Retention List. And Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) find themselves in a precarious situation. As per recent reports, KKR is unsure about retaining their captain Shreyas Iyer for IPL 2025. And this opened up a new problem. Who will captain the Knights for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL)?

Shreyas Iyer captained the team to glory after a span of 10 years when KKR went on to beat Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2024 final. But with IPL 2025 retention day arriving, it remains to be seen whether Iyer will be retained or not.

KKR to find a new captain from the IPL Auction?

If KKR fails to retain and go for a new captain, then the Kolkata outfits would lose a huge chunk of money. The best thing for the team would be to keep Iyer as the captain for a price of 18 crore. On the other hand, if Kolkata Knight Riders go on to find a new captain in the auction, they would eventually have to pay more money.

The likes of Rishabh Pant and other captain material players who will be available in the auction, won’t go for less money. In fact, these players can go well beyond 20 crores. And given the price that was achieved last season, 25 crores can be easily broken by teams who will head into the auction with a huge kitty.

As things stand, nothing is finalized between Shreyas Iyer and KKR. It can be highly likely that both the parties agree on an understanding that will see Iyer continue as the captain of the team and be retained by the defending champions with just a day to go for the D-Day.
