After Gary Kirsten’s exit as Pakistan head coach, two ex-players in fray to take over role – Report

Gary Kirsten left IPL franchise Gujarat Titans, earlier this year, to be the head coach of Pakistan cricket team.

Gary Kirsten leaving Pakistan head coach job might have come as a surprise to many, but the insider’s knew, that the South African was not happy with the way things were panning out with the PCB. On Monday, after his departure, the board even named Test ball coach, Jason Gillespie as the interim replacement, but that might only be a temporary decision.

As per a report in PTI, both Kirsten and Gillespie were not happy with their powers being taken away, with regards to selection of the team. “The problem is both Kirsten and Gillespie were not happy with their sudden demotion in powers with the selectors given powers to call all the shots,” a source told the agency.

Gary Kirsten Bids Adieu, New Candidates Emerge

“The situation now is that the PCB has to appoint a new white-ball coach, given the number of white-ball commitments of the national team coming up and leading up to the Champions Trophy early next year,” he added. Meanwhile, current selector Aaqib Javed and Saqlain Mushtaq are in the running to be full-time white-ball coach for Pakistan cricket team.

“One option is to let assistant coach Azhar Mahmood continue as interim head coach but Aaqib or Saqlain could also land the job,” he added. “Look we had high hopes from Kirsten when we entered into a two-year contract with him. The idea was he could help the PCB to revolutionise the white-ball team.

“But he did not have a single camp in Pakistan for any of the white-ball teams. He was not present at the white-ball camps of the Shaheens throughout the summer. And it all culminated with him missing the majority of the Champions Cup,” the source added.

Another potential complaint against Kirsten was, he spent less than 30 days in Pakistan after his appointment, and had insisted on hiring more foreign coaches, which did not work well with the PCB.
