The star pacer, who missed out on India’s BGT squad against Australia, might still have a chance to make a comeback. According to Indian Express, the veteran bowler could be considered for selection if he proves his fitness in the upcoming Ranji Trophy matches.
Shami needs to prove fitness in Ranji Trophy
Shami, who hasn’t played competitive cricket since the 2023 World Cup final against Australia, is expected to represent Bengal in their fourth-round Ranji Trophy clash against Karnataka in Bengaluru. While Bengal are currently battling against Kerala, their next Ranji Trophy game against Karnataka will be starting from November 6.
If deemed fit and included, it would be a special news for the Indian cricket team, that recently squandered their 12-year streak of consecutive Test series wins at home. Shami is a tailor-made pacer for conditions Down Under as he has claimed 31 wickets at a strike rate of 54.2 and an average of 32.16 across eight Tests in Australia. The Indian fans still remember his outstanding World Cup 2023 campaign, where he emerged as the tournament’s highest wicket-taker with 24 scalps in just 7 matches.

The 34-year-old has been actively sharing his rehabilitation progress on Instagram. In his latest post on Saturday, Shami shared a video of an intense workout session with his trainer, accompanied by a heartfelt message expressing his desire to regain fitness and return to domestic cricket as a stepping stone to representing India again.
“Putting in my efforts and getting better with my bowling fitness day by day. Will continue working hard towards getting ready for the match and playing domestic red-ball cricket. Sorry to all cricket fans and BCCI too, but very soon I’m ready to play red-ball cricket, love you all,” Shami wrote on Instagram.
In Shami’s absence, India’s pace attack will be spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah, with Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep providing support. The squad also includes promising pacers like Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana, who has got his maiden Test call-up. Additionally, Mukesh Kumar, Navdeep Saini, and Khaleel Ahmed have been named as reserve players, ensuring adequate backup options in Australia.
