Mohammad Rizwan set to become Pakistan’s white-ball captain, PCB to announce soon

Mohammad Rizwan’s appointment as captain is expected to energise Pakistan’s white-ball squads with his proactive approach and commitment to team cohesion.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is poised to appoint Mohammad Rizwan as captain of Pakistan’s white-ball cricket teams, with Geo News sources indicating that the official announcement is expected soon.

PCB new plan in white-ball cricket

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi reportedly held a crucial meeting with Rizwan, during which it was decided that the wicketkeeper-batter would take over as captain for both the ODI and T20I formats.

Rizwan’s appointment comes after head coach Gary Kirsten and the national selectors backed the idea, recognising his leadership experience and consistent performances. Alongside Rizwan, all-rounder Salman Ali Agha is set to step into the role of vice-captain for the white-ball squads.

Mohammad Rizwan leadership credentials

Rizwan brings a wealth of captaincy experience to the role. He has led multiple domestic teams, including the Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Under his captaincy, Multan clinched their maiden PSL title in 2021, defeating Peshawar Zalmi in the final. Rizwan’s ability to manage high-stakes matches and bring out the best in his teammates has positioned him as an ideal candidate for Pakistan’s leadership needs.

Babar Azam steps down

The change in leadership comes after former captain Babar Azam voluntarily stepped down as Pakistan’s white-ball captain earlier this month.

Expressing a desire to focus on his individual performance, Babar stated, “I want to prioritise my performance, enjoy my batting, and spend quality time with my family, which brings me joy.” His decision leaves a legacy that includes significant achievements, and his focus now shifts to leading Pakistan in Test cricket.

What Mohammad Rizwan appointment means for Pakistan

Mohammad Rizwan’s appointment as captain is expected to energise Pakistan’s white-ball squads with his proactive approach and commitment to team cohesion. Known for his resilience and discipline, Rizwan’s leadership style aligns with the PCB’s goals of building a well-rounded and competitive squad for the future.

As the team gears up for a busy season, including the upcoming Australia series, Rizwan’s captaincy may signal a fresh start for Pakistan’s white-ball ambitions.

With Rizwan at the helm, Pakistan’s white-ball teams are looking towards a new chapter of cricket, aiming to harness young talent and create a winning combination under his steady leadership.
