India’s junior men’s hockey team clinched the bronze medal in a thrilling 3-2 shootout victory over New Zealand at the Sultan of Johor Cup on Saturday. Under the guidance of new coach PR Sreejesh, and with an impressive performance from goalkeeper Bikramjit Singh, India held their nerve to secure a podium finish.

Bikramjit Singh: The Hero in Goal

The match ended in a 2-2 draw during regulation time, leading to a tense shootout. Goalkeeper Bikramjit Singh proved to be India’s backbone, making three critical saves that ultimately ensured victory. Strikers Gurjot Singh, Manmeet Singh, and Sourabh Anand Kushwaha converted their penalties, while Bikramjit’s saves kept New Zealand at bay.

Dominant Start by India Hockey Team

India opened the scoring early, showing strength in both attack and defence. Dilraj Singh put India on the scoreboard in the 11th minute, capitalising on a well-placed assist from Mukesh Toppo. India’s control extended into the second quarter as they maintained a strong defensive stance, allowing New Zealand few chances to advance.

In the 20th minute, India doubled their lead through a brilliant field goal orchestrated by a combination of Manmeet Singh, Anmol Ekka, and Mukesh Toppo, with Manmeet executing the final touch. India looked well-positioned with a 2-0 lead, creating multiple chances but unable to extend their advantage before halftime.

Fourth-Quarter comeback by New Zealand

After a goalless third quarter, New Zealand staged a comeback in the final quarter. Owen Brown scored in the 51st minute with a well-placed pass from Bradley Rothwell, narrowing the deficit to 2-1. Pressing hard, New Zealand equalised in the 57th minute as Jonty Elmes, who had previously scored a hat-trick against India, found the back of the net to level the score.
