“Not ready to lead”: Bangladesh face another setback, Najmul Shanto wants to quit as captain

Najmul Hossain Shanto has reportedly informed the Bangladesh Cricket Board that he wishes to step down as captain across all formats

Bangladesh cricket team have been dealt with a fresh blow, with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto wanting to resign from the role across all formats. The team is already dealing with a tough transition period, with veterans like Shakib al Hasan, Mahmadullah, Mashrafe Mortaza and Tamim Iqbal having announced their retirement. Shanto reportedly wanted to step down as T20I skipper after the World Cup but later decided to give up captaincy for all three formats.

Shanto wants to quit as Bangladesh skipper

As per Cricbuzz, a top Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) official confirmed that Shanto “was not ready to lead the side after the series against South Africa”. Shanto is awaiting the response from the board on his decision. Efforts made by another top BCB director to convince Shanto to take back his decision hasn’t been fruitful so far.

Yes, he informed us that he is not ready to lead the side after the South Africa series,” a top BCB official said.

Najmul Shanto has a fairly decent record as Bangladesh skipper, not having a good run off late barring one or two series. Bangladesh is currently playing a two-match Test series against South Africa and are 0-1 down. The only highlight of Shanto’s career as captain in Tests in Bangladesh’s historic series win against Pakistan in August.

The report further stated that the board can potentially look at Mehidy Hasan Miraz to lead in Tests and Towhrid Hridoy to lead in the white-ball formats. The BCB will have to make a quick and smart decision, given that the Champions Trophy is just a few months away.
