“He would pick playing XI”: Glenn Maxwell spills beans on Virender Sehwag’s autocratic reign as KXIP mentor

Former Kings XI Punjab star Glenn Maxwell accused Virender Sehwag of high-handedness during his time as the mentor of the IPL team in 2017

Glenn Maxwell has very little fond memories during his stint with Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), thanks to Virender Sehwag. The Australian cricketer has made some bold claims about the former Indian opener, accusing him of high-handedness while has the team’s mentor. Maxwell, who was a part of KXIP till 2017, claimed that Sehwag forced his hand on selection of the playing 11 and that he played a huge role in demotivating players.

Glenn Maxwell makes tall claim on Sehwag from PBKS

In his book “The Showman’, Glenn Maxwell spills the beans on how his relationship with Sehwag detoriated over the years, to an extent where the latter told him he “doesn’t need a fan” like the former. The Aussie said that Sehwag did not allow the other coaches and the captain to have a say in selecting the playing XI, claiming that he insisted that he will be the one to make the final picks.

When it came to selection, I thought it might be a good idea to bring the coaches into a WhatsApp group to make our decisions. Everyone agreed to this and shared their teams, with the exception of Sehwag. At the end of the process, he made it clear that he would pick the starting XI, end of story,” Maxwell said.

Maxwell recalled J Arunkumar’s – then KXIP coach – tenure at the team, claiming that he was just a name sake coach while Sehwag was pulling the strings. He claimed that players and coaches approached him to seek clarity on the management but he found it difficult to give them a straightforward response.

Maxwell’s association with Sehwag came to an end after KXIP’s loss in their final league match in 2017. The then KXIP captain was held responsible by Sehwag for the loss and had also labeled Maxwell as a “big disappointment”. When the Aussie reportedly attempted to reach out to Sehwag, having been hurt by his remarks, the latter said that he “Doesn’t need a fan like him”. He added that he warned the team owners about Sehwag’s high-handedness and how it won’t help the side sustain in the long run. Sehwag was removed as the team’s mentor after the next season, one year after Maxwell parted ways with the team.
