For the second year in a row, India is set to have no representation in the singles categories of the BWF World Tour Finals. As the race for qualification reaches its final phase, no Indian badminton players appear in the Top-25 rankings for either men’s or women’s singles, confirming another absence from the prestigious season-ending tournament.
Indian Hopes Dim for Singles Representation
Despite a year filled with events and international participation, Indian singles players have struggled to break into the upper ranks required for BWF World Tour Finals qualification.
In 2023, no singles players from India managed to qualify, and 2024 appears to be following the same trend. With no Indians in the Top-25, securing a spot in the finals for singles remains out of reach.
Limited Doubles Chances in Women’s Doubles
While singles prospects look bleak, India holds a sliver of hope in the doubles categories, particularly in women’s doubles. The duo of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand Pullela, alongside Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa, are currently ranked 7th and 8th, positioning them within reach of finals qualification. Their consistent performances have kept them in the race, and with four tournaments remaining, they have an opportunity to strengthen their standings.
However, Indian men’s doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, despite being in the Top-20, have slim chances of qualifying. Similarly, no Indian pairs rank within the Top-20 for mixed doubles, further limiting India’s participation prospects.
Final BWF World Tour Finals push with HYLO Open
The race for the BWF World Tour Finals 2024 resumes next week with the HYLO Open, the first of the four remaining qualifying events.
This Super 300 tournament, held from 29 October to 3 November, is followed by the Korea Masters (Super 300), the Kumamoto Masters in Japan (Super 500), and the China Masters (Super 750), all crucial for competitors aiming for the season finale.
Asian Challenge: Strong Contenders Return
With top players returning from a post-Olympic break, competition for the World Tour Finals spots is fierce, especially in Asia. In men’s singles, players such as Anders Antonsen and Chou Tien Chen are leading the pack, while in women’s singles, a tight race continues between Thai and Japanese players for the coveted spots. India’s absence among these contenders highlights the challenging season Indian shuttlers have faced, underscoring the importance of these tournaments in the final stretch.
Final Countdown to Hangzhou BWF World Tour Finals
The BWF World Tour Finals will take place from 11 to 15 December in Hangzhou, China. The top eight players and pairs in each category will be invited, with reigning Olympic champions receiving automatic qualifications. With only the best 14 results from BWF World Tour events counting toward the rankings, players are fully focused on capitalising on these last qualifying opportunities to secure a spot at one of the year’s most significant tournaments.
For Indian badminton, the next few weeks will be closely watched to see if the women’s doubles pairs can secure a place in Hangzhou, with the future of Indian singles looking to need more support and development heading into the 2025 season.
