The IPL 2025 Retention deadline is fast approaching and teams are finalising their play list before the submission day. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) has a tough job in their hands. Will they retain Mitchell Starc or throw them in the Mega Auction. Last season, Starc became the highest priced player ever in IPL history after being bought for a whopping price of 24.75 crores.
But it is safe to say that Starc wasn’t at his very best given the price which KKR gave away. The Australian pacer bagged 17 wickets from 15 games. And now if rumours are to be believed then Starc is not on the list to be retained by the reigning champions.
Highest Priced Player – not to be retained?
The huge price and form is set to be the main reasons for Mitchell Starc not being retained by the Kolkata outfits. Albeit a decent performance in IPL 2024. Starc bagged the Man of the Match in the finals where KKR triumphed over Sunrisers Hyderabad.
But with few retention slots and budget limited, KKR will be ready to throw the Australian pacer in the mega auction. And if everything bodes well, the Kolkata Knight Riders can even have the option of bringing the player back via Right To Match (RTM).
As things stand, Starc didn’t provide a value for money last season. Bagging just 17 wickets from 15 matches is subpar going by Starc’s standards. After his heroics in the ODI World Cup 2023, it was frenzy for him in the auction. But now as teams are ready to retain their core, Starc unfortunately doesn’t find a place in the team.
