South Africa steamroll Bangladesh despite Mehidy Hasan’s heroics to take 1-0 lead

South Africa clinched a comprehensive 8 wicket victory over Bangladesh in Dhaka to take a 1-0 lead in the BAN vs SA series

South Africa clinched a comprehensive 7-wicket win against Bangladesh to go 1-0 up in the BAN vs SA Test series. The hosts were completely outclassed as the Proteas completed the 106 run-chase in no time on Day 5 in Dhaka. Kagiso Rabada, who had bagged his 300th Test wicket in the 1st innings earlier, denied a fighting Mehidy Hasan Miraz a century as Bangladesh were bowled out for 307. With this win, South Africa stay alive in contention for a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final in June 2025.

While most of the top and the middle order flopped for Bangladesh, it was Mehidy Hasan who once again rescued the team. Despite managing to survive on Day 4 and stitching a solid partnership with Jaker Ali (58), he found no luck as batters kept walking in and out at the other end. Rabada had the last laugh as he got rid of Hasan on 97. bringing the curtains down on Bangladesh’s 2nd innings.

Bangladesh’s 1st innings flop show

The trouble began when Bangladesh were bundled out for 106 runs in the 1st innings. Rabada, Mulder and Maharaj wreaked havoc on the side, not letting the side score any runs. Opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy was the top-scorer with 30 runs to his name while 8 others were dismissed for just single-digit scores. In response, South Africa posted 308 runs, with keeper-batter Verreynne scoring a gritty century. Taijul Islam was once again the star with the ball, bagging a five wicket haul.

While Joy once again stood out with a 40-run knock in the 2nd innings, the rest of the top-order including Shadman Islam, Shan Masood, Mushfiqur Rahim failed to fire, putting pressure on the middle and the lower order. Mehidy Hasan tried his best to propel Bangladesh to a decent total but could not prevent the onslaught launched by Rabada.
