Shreyas Iyer requests for “time off”, to miss Mumbai vs Tripura Ranji Trophy clash

A senior Mumbai Cricket Association official confirmed to PTI that Shreyas Iyer would miss the Ranji Trophy clash against Tripura

Mumbai batter Shreyas Iyer has reportedly requested some “time off” and will miss the Ranji Trophy tie against Tripura. Earlier, reports had suggested that Iyer needed rest for a week following which the batter took to social media to rubbish such claims. However, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has confirmed that Shreyas has asked for a break and that he won’t be a part of the team’s third round match in the Ranji Trophy.

As per news agency PTI, Shreyas Iyer had requested the Mumbai senior men’s selection committee for some time off. The report states that the batter’s appeal has been accepted. as confirmed by a MCA official. So far, Shreyas Iyer has played for Mumbai in three matches this season – one Irani Cup tie against Rest of India (ROI) and the two rounds of Ranji Trophy that have taken place so far.

Shreyas Iyer scored a century in the game against Maharashtra, his first since 2021. The Mumbai batter has been actively participating in red-ball domestic tournaments since August as he attempts to find his way back into the Indian Test side. So far, he has featured in the following tournaments – Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament, Duleep Trophy, Irani Cup and Ranji Trophy.

Apart from Iyer, Mumbai have also decided to drop Prithvi Shaw from the squad for the game. According to Cricbuzz, the Mumbai selection committee, which consists of Sanjay Patil, Ravi Thaker, Jeetendra Thackeray, Kiran Powar, and Vikrant Yeligeti, head coach Omkar Salvi, and captain Ajinkya Rahane, all feel that Shaw is ‘overweight’ and doesn’t take practice seriously enough.
