Why did Mumbai drop Prithvi Shaw Ranji Trophy squad?

Prithvi Shaw was dropped from the Mumbai squad for the Tripura match in the Ranji Trophy 2024. Why was he dropped? Let’s find out.

Prithvi Shaw’s cricketing journey is turning into a disappointment. Once a promising young batter with the potential to be India’s next big star, he is now struggling to perform even in domestic tournaments. The Mumbai batter has been dropped from the squad for the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy match against Tripura. Despite being one of the most talented batters in the circuit, his performance in recent years has deteriorated, leaving not only himself but also those who believed in him, disappointed.

Why did Prithvi Shaw drop?

The Mumbai selectors stated that Prithvi Shaw has been given a ‘break’ to work on his form and fitness. However, reports suggest that disciplinary action has been taken against Shaw as Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane and other selectors believe that the right-handed batter has fitness concerns, and he is not determined enough to address them.

“He has been given a break. The selectors and the coach have had a discussion with him and briefed him about areas to work on, including fitness,” MCA secretary Abhay Hadap told The Hindu yesterday. It seems more like a warning than a serious action.

Shaw’s fitness issues have been a long-standing topic of concern, and his poor form is likely related to it. His last four innings of 7, 12, 1, and 39 have led to his exclusion from the team.

Shaw last played for the Indian team back in 2021, and since then, he hasn’t come close to getting a call back to the national squad. Delhi Capitals retained him for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, but he missed the opportunity as he struggled throughout the season. This year, it is unlikely that he will be retained by the DC squad. To be picked by other teams in the auction, he will need to show some improvement.
