New Zealand women break into impromptu musical performance after lifting T20 World Cup

New Zealand women's cricket team defeated South Africa by 32 runs in the finals to lift their maiden ICC Women's T20 World Cup on Sunday

It was indeed a special moment for the New Zealand women’s cricket team as they lifted their maiden Women’s T20 World Cup title on Sunday. The celebrations doubled when the Player of the Match Amelia Kerr decided to lead her team into a musical performance after the presentation ceremony. Kerr’s all-round performance powered the Kiwis to a 32-run win against South Africa in the finals of the marquee tournament.

NZ-W vs SA-W

The Proteas, having won the toss and elected to field, restricted NZ-W but to 158/5 in their 20 overs. The first innings witnessed an intense battle between two evenly matched-teams. New Zealand started aggressively, with the in-form openers looking to score quickly. However, South Africa’s bowlers managed to contain the momentum, picking up wickets at regular intervals.

When New Zealand bowlers entered the field to defend their 158 runs, there was a great amount of confidence that oozed off the Kiwi unit. All this even though they came on the back of 10 defeats before the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. In the end, they beat every side except Australia, whose dominance has been over (for some time at least). Despite an opening stand of 51 runs by Laura Woolvardt and Tanzim Brits, New Zealand knew that the game was for them. In the next 71 runs, they completely mauled the Proteas, taking 9 wickets in that period. Rosemary Mair was the pick of the bowlers as she clubbed three wickets for 25 runs.
