Ranji Trophy Day 2 Round-up: Shreyas Iyer makes comeback, Amandeep scores double-century

Shreyas Iyer marked his comeback with a century, while Deepak Chahar’s 5-wicket haul helped Rajasthan bowl out Himachal Pradesh for under 100, Chhattisgarh's Amandeep Khare scores double century against Saurashtra on Day 2 of Ranji Trophy Round 2.

What a day it was in Ranji Trophy Round 2, Day 2, where we witnessed batters amassing huge scores across several stadiums in India. The highlight of the day was Tamil Nadu declaring their innings after scoring 674 runs for the loss of just 6 wickets, batting for 158.2 overs against Delhi in the national capital. Meanwhile, Mumbai continued their innings, posting 441 runs against Maharashtra on the second day, taking a commanding 315-run lead. Rajasthan played well against Himachal Pradesh, scoring 334 runs, and bowled Himachal out for just 98, enforcing a follow-on.

Additionally, Sanju Samson came out to bat alongside Sachin Baby and remained not out at 15 by the end of Day 2. Kerala ended the day at 161/3 after 50 overs. In Bihar vs Bengal, for the second consecutive day, no match happened between the two teams due to incessant rain in Kalyani, the playing field, around 50 km away from Kolkata.

Mhatre shines, mixed day for Iyer as Mumbai takes lead

It was a mixed day for Indian batter Shreyas Iyer, who is currently struggling to secure his place in the Indian squad. Mumbai continued their innings, and 17-year-old sensation Ayush Mhatre rescued the team by scoring a brilliant 176. On the other hand, Iyer also contributed with a century, scoring 142 runs—his first-class hundred after 3 years. However, his day took a sour turn when he injured his finger while fielding. Iyer had to return to the dressing room and didn’t come out to field again.

Take a Bow Amandeep Khare

Starting the day unbeaten on 57, Amandeep Khare powered his innings, eventually reaching a double-century, supported by 20 fours and four sixes. Partnering with Sanjeet Desai, who contributed 146 runs, Chhattisgarh piled up 578 for 7 against Saurashtra by stumps. Saurashtra, who suffered a heavy defeat against Tamil Nadu in the opening round in Coimbatore, now face the challenge at home. They’ll be counting on big contributions from Pujara, Sheldon Jackson, and others to turn the game around.

Washington Sundar shines before BGT

The Tamil Nadu squad piled up heavy runs on Day 2 in the national capital against Delhi, declaring at 674. Washington Sundar was the star with the bat, scoring 152 runs. Sundar has been fighting to secure his place in the Indian team, and this performance served as an important audition ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Deepak Chahar stars with the ball

Deepak Chahar shone for Rajasthan, bundling Himachal Pradesh out for just 98 runs, and enforcing a follow-on. Chahar took 5 wickets, while Aniket Choudhary contributed with 3 wickets. Khalil Ahmed and Arafat Khan chipped in with one wicket each. In Himachal’s second innings, Manav Suthar also managed to pick up two wickets.
