Chennaiyin FC staged a spectacular comeback to secure a 3-2 victory over NorthEast United FC in an exhilarating Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 fixture at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, Guwahati. This five-goal thriller marked the India Super League season’s resumption following the October international break, and both teams showcased their impressive attacking prowess.

First Half: A Dynamic Start

NorthEast United vs Chennaiyin: Early Lead for the Highlanders

The home team, NorthEast United FC, energized by robust support, started strongly. Their swift counterattack culminated with Parthib Gogoi finding Nestor Albiach in the penalty box, allowing the Spanish midfielder to give the Highlanders a lead just five minutes into the game.

Chennaiyin FC’s Equalizer

The game witnessed a constant battle for midfield dominance, with both teams generating numerous chances. Chennaiyin FC’s Lukas Brambilla and Connor Shields showed exceptional coordination with Farukh Choudhury and Irfan Yadwad, leading to multiple opportunities. Their efforts paid off when Shields delivered an exceptional corner that found Wilmar Jordan. The Colombian striker rose to header in the equalizer for Chennaiyin FC in the 25th minute.

Capitalizing on momentum, Chennaiyin FC raised their tempo. In the 34th minute, a foul on Ryan Edwards by Michel Zabaco resulted in a penalty. Lukas Brambilla executed the spot-kick flawlessly, giving the Marina Machans the lead.

The second half mirrored the first in intensity. In the 51st minute, Wilmar Jordan exploited a defensive lapse by NorthEast United FC to double Chennaiyin FC’s lead, catching the defenders off-guard as they anticipated an offside call.

NorthEast United’s Response

Despite controlling possession in the second period, NorthEast United struggled to create clear chances. Owen Coyle strategically introduced Elsinho to bolster Chennaiyin FC’s midfield.

Late Drama and Conclusion

Laldinliana Renthlei’s dismissal in the 83rd minute, following a second yellow card, added tension to the final moments. NorthEast United was handed a lifeline when Irfan Yadwad committed a foul on Alaaeddine Ajaraie in the penalty area. Ajaraie converted the penalty in the 89th minute, marking his fifth goal of the season. Nonetheless, Chennaiyin FC successfully defended their lead, securing all three points.
