The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering a significant leadership change for the Indian women’s cricket team after a disappointing campaign in the ongoing T20 World Cup in the UAE. Harmanpreet Kaur, who has captained the side since 2016, may be on the verge of being replaced, as the team failed to progress beyond the group stages, marking one of their poorest performances in recent years.
BCCI to discuss captaincy transition
Sources indicate that the BCCI is preparing to meet with the selection committee and head coach Amol Muzumdar to discuss Harmanpreet’s future as captain. This meeting is expected to take place before the squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand, beginning October 24, is finalised.
Although Harmanpreet has been a stalwart of Indian cricket, her leadership has come under scrutiny, especially after India’s failure to make it past the group stages in the World Cup.
Harmanpreet first took over the T20 captaincy in 2016 following India’s group-stage exit in the tournament held on home soil. Under her leadership, the team reached the knockouts in several ICC events, including the final of the 2020 T20 World Cup.
However, they have struggled to secure a major title, and the recent campaign has reignited debates about the team’s direction under her captaincy.
Familiar problems with Harmanpreet Kaur & Co
Despite entering the T20 World Cup with a strong squad, India’s hopes were dashed after losing to New Zealand in their opening match, a result that severely affected their chances of reaching the semi-finals. A subsequent defeat to Australia sealed their fate, leaving the team with just two wins from four matches.
While Harmanpreet performed adequately with the bat, the team’s overall inconsistency, particularly in the batting department, was a recurring issue throughout the tournament.
The Indian team had undergone extensive preparations for the tournament, with preparatory camps and early arrival in the UAE to acclimatise to the conditions. However, the tournament proved to be a disappointing affair, as India’s familiar batting collapses and inability to handle pressure once again came to the forefront.
Time for a New Leader for India Women’s Cricket Team?
While Harmanpreet’s place in the Indian squad is secure, her position as captain is now under serious review. “The BCCI will certainly discuss whether to have a new captain on board going ahead,” said a source within the Indian board to Indian Express. “Harmanpreet will continue to be an important member of the team, but the BCCI feels it’s time for transition.”
The upcoming 50-over World Cup, set to be hosted by India, could be a crucial factor in the board’s decision. Appointing a new captain before the New Zealand series would give the incoming leader ample time to build a cohesive squad and develop a strategy for the World Cup.
Changes on Horizon for BCCI
In addition to the potential leadership change, there is speculation that some support staff contracts may not be renewed following the World Cup debacle. With the Indian board providing all the resources requested by the team, there is a growing belief within the BCCI that a fresh approach is needed to take Indian women’s cricket to the next level.
As the Indian team looks ahead to future tournaments, all eyes will be on the BCCI’s decision regarding Harmanpreet’s leadership and whether the team embarks on a new chapter with a different captain at the helm.
