Young Indian pacer Akash Deep has been making waves in the international cricket scene, but when it comes to emulating the skills of India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, the 27-year-old from Bengal admits that not everything is possible to replicate. After being picked as a replacement for Bumrah in the Ranchi Test against England earlier this year, Akash has had the opportunity to bowl alongside the world-class bowler, gaining invaluable insights.
Learning from Jasprit Bumrah
Akash Deep, now three Tests into his career, emphasised that while Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling style is unique, the real value lies in the guidance and advice the experienced pacer offers. “It’s not really about that (looking to try Bumrah’s variations). Jasprit Bumrah is a different kind of bowler, so it’s not possible to learn or follow everything he does when bowling,” Akash shared in a recent interview to The Telegraph.
However, Akash has made it a point to clear his doubts and seek Bumrah’s advice on technical aspects when needed. “If there’s anything to ask him when it comes to dealing with a situation, I have done so… Just about small technical stuff or a few minor tweaks here and there (related to bowling),” he said.
Akash is grateful for the opportunity to play alongside Bumrah, noting that the experience helps him improve his game. “Whenever there is a slight confusion about anything, you can go up to him and talk to him about it. He has the experience, so he can share that with you,” he added.
Morne Morkel influence on Indian Pacers
In addition to learning from Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deep has also been benefiting from working under India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel. The former South African fast bowler, who retired from international cricket in 2018, brings fresh insights to the table. “He’s well aware of the recent developments, changes and happenings in cricket. He also understands the psyche of us quicks, and we can relate to what he says,” Akash explained.
Morkel’s recent playing experience means he is in tune with the modern game, helping young bowlers like Akash adapt and refine their skills.
Focused on Task ahead for Akash Deep
With a three-Test series against New Zealand starting soon in Bengaluru, Akash Deep is clear about his approach—bowling to his strengths and focusing on hitting the right areas. “I don’t look at the team or the player I’m bowling to. Doing so only adds to the pressure. I just look to bowl in the right areas, which is my strength, be it (bowling to) a proper batter or a tailender,” Akash said.
His consistency with the new ball has been a key factor in his success, as he aims to provide early breakthroughs for his team. “In Indian conditions, the new ball provides a pacer with the maximum opportunities for early inroads. So, I try to bowl as well as possible with the new ball and strike,” Akash concluded.
With the guidance of veterans like Bumrah and Morkel, Akash Deep looks poised to make his mark as a reliable pacer for Team India. His confidence and willingness to learn from the best suggest a bright future ahead.
