Mohammed Shami’s comeback delayed as he races against time for full fitness

Mohammed Shami races against time as he misses the India vs New Zealand squad. Recovering from injury, he's pushing hard to return while training at NCA Bengaluru.

Fans will have to wait a little longer as India’s Mohammed Shami’s name was missing from the recently released India versus New Zealand squad on Friday night. The first bowler from Uttar Pradesh will need more time to make his comeback into international cricket. Along with missing the IND vs NZ series, the 34-year-old, who’s been recovering from an injury sustained during the 2023 ODI World Cup, is also missing the opening rounds of some domestic cricket. Shami has been racing against time as he continues his training at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.

BGT awaits for Mohammed Shami

With Shami missing some of the domestic cricket season and the IND vs NZ series, the pressure to recover has increased as the highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) is scheduled to start in November. India will be touring Australia for a five-match Test series, and the team will be aiming for their third consecutive series win down under. As one of India’s most reliable bowlers, Shami’s availability will be crucial. If he manages to recover in time for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, he might get at least one Ranji Trophy match under his belt before the series.

Shami dismisses injury rumours

Recently, Mohammed Shami dismissed rumours of a fresh injury at the NCA. Some reports suggested the bowler had sustained another injury while training at the NCA. However, Shami took to social media to debunk these claims, stating that they were fake and that he is recovering well.

Shami’s experience important for Australia’s Tour

Shami’s inclusion in the squad is vital, as India will need at least four quality seamers on Australia’s hard pitches. Having previously played in Australia, Shami’s experience would be invaluable in leading the pace attack alongside Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.
