Opportunity in disguise. Star cricketers who haven’t been able to make it to India’s main XI have a chance to contend for the side. Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, and Ruturaj Gaikwad are some of the players who could feature in the ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup 2024. Unlike the last time, when all the players who participated in the event were 23 or under, the BCCI has decided to make a change with the T20 World Cup 2026 in mind.
Opportunity
The Emerging Asia Cup will start on October 18, and India’s A side will face Oman, Pakistan and UAE. With the India vs New Zealand 1st Test starting on October 16, all of Team India’s main players would be in Bengaluru.
“The board is looking into it. The senior selection committee will be picking the team for the Emerging team this time and they will be focusing on picking players who are T20 specialists, because of the T20 World Cup in 2026,” a BCCI source told the Times of India.
Young guns and experienced campaigners
This opens the doors for several players. Especially those who aren’t playing Test cricket or the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season, which starts on October 11. Most of the players are expected to be up-and-coming starts like Arshin Kulkari or Raj Limbani but experienced stars who could be in the scheme of things for the T20 World Cup 2026, which will be played in India and Sri Lanka.
Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer, who have been out of favours since early in the year, would be waiting for a comeback. Having won the IPL 2024 with the Kolkata Knight Riders as their captain, Shreyas would like to return to the T20I side while he’s already an integral part of the ODI setup. Kishan, meanwhile, hasn’t played for India since December last year and would be waiting for such a chance.
