Biased AFC shifts AFC Champions League matches out of Iran after “punishing” Mohun Bagan

The AFC’s recent decisions have drawn widespread criticism, particularly for its handling of the Mohun Bagan situation and the apparent favouritism shown towards clubs like Al Nassr.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has once again found itself embroiled in controversy, following its decision to move AFC Champions League matches out of Iran. This comes after AFC’s controversial “punishment” of Mohun Bagan Super Giant for not travelling to Iran due to security concerns, raising questions about fairness in the competition, especially as Al Nassr, featuring football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, faces a similar situation.

Mohun Bagan withdrawal sparks debate

Mohun Bagan’s journey in the AFC Champions League Two came to an abrupt end after the Indian club failed to travel to Iran for their fixture against Tractor FC on 2 October 2024. The decision not to travel was fuelled by rising security concerns following political unrest in Iran, particularly after the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. With widespread protests and a five-day mourning period, the safety of players and officials was a major issue for the Indian side.

Despite requests to reschedule or move the fixture to a neutral venue, the AFC rejected Mohun Bagan’s appeals. Instead, the AFC announced the club’s withdrawal from the tournament, with all their matches being cancelled and declared null and void. This harsh ruling has been seen by many as an unfair punishment, particularly given the legitimate safety concerns raised by the club.

Al Nassr and Esteghlal Fixture Relocation

In a strikingly similar scenario, Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr, featuring global football icon Cristiano Ronaldo, is facing the possibility of relocating their AFC Champions League Elite match against Esteghlal FC, scheduled for 22 October 2024, out of Iran. Rising tensions between Israel and Iran have caused further security concerns, prompting Al Nassr to consider moving the match to a neutral venue.

Reports suggest that Esteghlal will likely select Dubai as the new venue, mirroring the scenario of Mohun Bagan. This raises questions about the AFC’s consistency, given that Al Nassr seems to be receiving more favourable treatment compared to the Indian side.

Inconsistent AFC Decisions?

The AFC’s handling of the Mohun Bagan situation has raised concerns about bias and inconsistent decision-making. While the Indian club faced immediate expulsion for not travelling to Iran, the AFC appears more willing to accommodate Al Nassr’s request for a neutral venue, highlighting a possible double standard in the treatment of clubs from different regions.

In previous years, the AFC mandated that matches between Saudi and Iranian clubs be played on neutral grounds due to ongoing political tensions. While this rule was relaxed in recent editions of the tournament, the recent tensions have reignited concerns about player and team safety. Esteghlal’s fixture against Al Nassr, along with other matches such as Tractor vs Ravshan, will now be played outside Iran, sparking further controversy.

Unfair Punishment for Mohun Bagan in AFC Champions League

Mohun Bagan’s expulsion from the AFC Champions League Two is a significant setback, not only for the club but also for Indian football as a whole. The decision has left many questioning the AFC’s commitment to fairness, particularly in light of their decision to shift other matches out of Iran for similar reasons.

The Mariners’ exit from the competition has also impacted the remaining teams in Group A, with points being recalculated after the cancellation of Mohun Bagan’s matches. The club’s management has expressed disappointment at the AFC’s ruling, as they believed they had valid reasons to request a venue change for their fixture.

Mohun Bagan vs AFC

The AFC’s recent decisions have drawn widespread criticism, particularly for its handling of the Mohun Bagan situation and the apparent favouritism shown towards clubs like Al Nassr. The organisation’s inconsistent approach to security concerns and match relocations has led to growing concerns about bias and fairness within the competition. As tensions in the region continue to escalate, the AFC will need to address these issues transparently to maintain the integrity of the tournament.
