Mohun Bagan axed from AFC Champions League after Tractor no-show

AFC clarifies Mohun Bagan said to have withdrawn from AFC Champions League Two after failing to show up in Iran to face Tractor FC

Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan has been Axed from AFC Champions League 2 after failing to travel to Iran to face Tractor FC on 2nd October 2024. Mohun Bagan was slated to travel to Iran to play their second game of ACL Two but the Kolkata giants didn’t travel owing to the war situation in Iran.

Initially, Iran went to a 5-day mounting period after the death of their Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. Previously, InsideSport confirmed that 35 players and the other staff of the team submitted a written letter to the club, not to travel owing to their safety.

And now as things stand, the AFC has clarified since Mohun Bagan failed to turn up, the team is set to have been understood to have withdrawn from the tournament. The AFC further added that all the matches played by the club in ACL Two will be considered null and void.

In such a scenario, the team would be awarded no points, and no goals when the final rankings of the group stage be judged.

AFC Statement

In accordance with Article 5.2 of the AFC Champions League Two™ 2024/25 Competition Regulations (the “Competition Regulations”), the Asian Football Confederation (the “AFC”) confirms that India’s Mohun Bagan Super Giant are considered to have withdrawn from the AFC Champions League Two™ competition after the club failed to report to Tabriz, Islamic Republic of Iran, for their AFC Champions League Two™ Group A fixture against Tractor FC on October 2, 2024.

Consequently, all matches played by Mohun Bagan Super Giant are cancelled and considered null and void in accordance with Article 5.6 of the Competition Regulations. For the avoidance of doubt, no points and goals in the club’s matches shall be taken into consideration when determining the final rankings in Group A pursuant to Article 8.3 of the Competition Regulations.

The matter will now be referred to the relevant AFC Committee(s) as appropriate for their decision(s).
