Sanju Samson makes rare India opportunity count, smashes quick runs in Gwalior T20I vs Bangladesh

As the series progresses, Sanju Samson will be eager to build on his positive start and prove his value as a versatile player.

Sanju Samson grabbed his rare opportunity to play for India with both hands in the first T20I against Bangladesh in Gwalior, smashing a quickfire 29 off 19 balls. Opening the batting for only the sixth time in his T20I career, Samson’s contribution helped India sail to a comfortable seven-wicket victory, chasing down Bangladesh’s modest total of 127 runs inside just 11.5 overs.

Sanju Samson opens for India in rare role

Sanju Samson, more often known for playing in the middle order, was given the responsibility of opening the batting alongside young talent Abhishek Sharma. This marked a significant opportunity for the 29-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman, as he looks to cement his place in the Indian team. With senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli having retired from T20Is, Samson hopes to make a strong case for a regular spot in the side.

Though Samson has opened in T20Is before, his experience in this role is limited, with his previous efforts yielding mixed results. He had a memorable knock of 77 off 42 balls against Ireland, but also some low scores, including a golden duck against Sri Lanka. His 29 runs in this match, though not a half-century, were vital in ensuring India’s comfortable chase.

Aggressive knock by Sanju Samson in India vs Bangladesh

Samson’s innings was a mix of aggression and intent, as he hit six boundaries in his 19-ball stay at the crease. However, his attacking approach ultimately led to his dismissal. In the eighth over, he backed away to a delivery from Mehidy Hasan Miraz, attempting a big shot towards mid-wicket.

Unfortunately, he mistimed the shot and was caught by Rishad Hossain in the deep. Despite his dismissal, Samson’s quick runs gave India a solid platform in their chase.

India dominance in chase

After restricting Bangladesh to 127 runs in 19.5 overs, India’s batsmen made light work of the target. Abhishek Sharma and Samson started strongly, with the former continuing his good form after Samson’s departure. India’s chase was wrapped up with ease as the middle order led by Hardik Pandya saw the team home with more than eight overs to spare.

Crucial chance for Sanju Samson

With key players Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill being rested for the series, Samson has been given a crucial chance to showcase his potential as a reliable opener. Jaiswal, the leading run-scorer in the last series against Bangladesh, and Gill, who closely followed him, are both considered India’s top young talents. Samson’s performance in this series will be closely watched, as he seeks consistency to secure a regular spot in India’s white-ball setup.

At 29 years old, Samson has long been striving to establish himself in the national team since his debut in 2015. His opportunity in the T20I series against Bangladesh is significant, especially with changes in India’s lineup following the retirement of big names like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. As he continues to fight for a permanent place in the team, Samson’s ability to deliver quick runs under pressure will be key to his future with India.

What’s ahead?

As the series progresses, Sanju Samson will be eager to build on his positive start and prove his value as a versatile player. With more opportunities ahead, he has the chance to solidify his place in India’s plans for the future, particularly in the shorter format of the game.
