This is why they said it was a dead ball, but there are specific rules regarding this. According to ICC rule 20.1.1.1, it is considered settled in the hands of the wicket-keeper or the bowler. Rule 20.1.2 states that the ball shall be considered dead when it is clear to the bowler’s end umpire that the fielding side and both batters at the wicket have ceased to regard it as in play.
