The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup is all set to start today (October 3) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The tournament first took place in 2009, and this is the ninth edition. The women’s T20I grand event has seen only three winners, with Australia standing out as the top nation, having claimed victory in six of the eight editions held so far.
This year, seven cricketers are set to participate in their ninth T20 World Cup. Notable names include India’s skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, Kiwi Sophie Devine, and star Australian all-rounder Ellyse Perry, among others. The blend of youth and experience among the players in the tournament will make it a grand spectacle. Let’s take a look at the players who will be participating in their ninth edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
Marizanne Kapp (South Africa)
Marizanne Kapp has been associated with the South African team for a long time. She was the highest wicket-taker in their run to the final in 2023. She will be crucial for the Proteas once again, having played 26 matches in the tournament since 2009.
Suzie Bates (New Zealand)
Suzie Bates is not just the top scorer in T20Is; she is also the highest run-scorer in the tournament. In just 36 matches, she is the only player to surpass 1,000 runs. She will be looking to help New Zealand secure their first title alongside skipper Sophie Devine.
Harmanpreet Kaur (India)
With 35 T20 World Cup matches since 2009, Harmanpreet looks to add more records to her tally. She is the only Indian to score a century in the tournament and hopes to lead her team to its first ICC trophy.
Sophie Devine (New Zealand)
Sophie Devine, with 32 appearances, is another key player participating in her ninth tournament. She will lead New Zealand’s campaign before stepping down as T20I captain after the World Cup.
Stafanie Taylor (West Indies)
Having led West Indies to victory in 2016 against Australia, she is one of the most experienced players in women’s T20Is. The 33-year-old will bring her experience of 31 T20 World Cup games to support skipper Hayley Matthews.
Ellyse Perry (Australia)
As the all-rounder with the most appearances (42) in the Women’s T20 World Cup, Perry is also the third-highest wicket-taker in the tournament’s history, with 40 wickets in 42 matches.
