In a heartwarming gesture, Prime Minister Narendra Modi penned a letter to Saroj Devi, mother of India’s Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra, to express his gratitude and appreciation. The reason? A homemade delicacy—’choorma’—prepared by Saroj Devi, which left the Prime Minister deeply moved.
Special Request Fulfilled by Neeraj Chopra
Earlier this year, in January, PM Narendra Modi had asked Neeraj Chopra to bring him some homemade ‘choorma’, a traditional dish from Haryana and Rajasthan, often enjoyed as a sweet treat. Saroj Devi, honouring the Prime Minister’s request, sent this special dish prepared with love.
The opportunity to savour the delicacy came during the official visit of the Prime Minister of Jamaica to India. During the banquet held for the visiting dignitary, Neeraj Chopra handed over the homemade ‘choorma’ to the Prime Minister.
PM Narendra Modi emotional letter
Touched by the gesture, PM Modi was so moved that he couldn’t resist writing a personal letter to Neeraj’s mother, expressing his emotions. In the letter, he fondly recalled his conversation with Neeraj about the dish and how he felt deeply emotional after finally tasting it.
“Respected Saroj Devi ji, Regards! Hope you are healthy, safe and happy. Yesterday at a banquet organised on the occasion of the visit of the Prime Minister of Jamaica to India, I got the opportunity to meet Neeraj. My happiness went up multiple times when he gave me delicious choorma made by you. After eating this choorma today, I could not stop myself from writing a letter to you. Neeraj has often talked about this choorma with me, but today I felt emotional after eating it,” PM Modi wrote in his letter.
Touching Moment Before Navratri
In his heartfelt message, the Prime Minister noted that the timing of this gift was particularly special, coinciding with the beginning of Navratri, a festival during which he fasts. He drew a parallel between the strength Neeraj receives from his mother’s cooking to win medals and the energy he himself gained from the dish to continue serving the country.
“Mother is the embodiment of strength, affection and dedication. It’s a coincidence that I got this prasad a day before Navratri begins. I fast during these nine days of Navratri. In a way, this choorma of yours has become my main food before my fasting period. Just like the food prepared by you gives Neeraj the energy to win medals for the country, similarly this choorma will give me the strength to serve the nation for the next 9 days,” PM Modi shared in his letter.
Token of Appreciation
The Prime Minister concluded his letter with a note of gratitude, promising Saroj Devi and the women of the nation that he would continue working with dedication towards making India a developed nation. The letter, which has now touched the hearts of many across the country, is a testament to the special bond between the Prime Minister and the people who contribute in unique ways to India’s success.
“On this occasion of festival Navratri, I assure you and the women of this country that I will continue to work with more dedication to make the resolution of a developed India a reality. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!” he wrote.
This simple yet profound exchange highlights the deep respect PM Modi holds for the families behind India’s sporting heroes, acknowledging not just their achievements but also the quiet strength and support provided by their loved ones.
