India’s javelin ace Neeraj Chopra is on the hunt for a new coach ahead of the next athletics season. The Paris Olympics sliver medalist was working with biomechanics expert-turned-coach Dr. Klaus Bartonietz since 2019. However, as per reports, the German has now recommended Neeraj to look for a new coach to elevate his game further.
Neeraj Chopra wants new coach
Bartonietz took over from Uwe Hohn as Neeraj Chopra’s coach in a full-time capacity until the Paris Olympics 2024. The biomechanics expert cited old age and family commitments to make himself unavailable for the next season. The German is currently 75 years old.
“He (Bartonietz) told us that he had done the best he could and it was time for Neeraj to work with a (new) coach who could elevate his game further,” Athletics Federation of India (AFI) president Adille Sumariwalla was quoted as saying by Circle of Sport.

Neeraj Chopra had a stellar run under Bartonietz as his coach. It started with the prized gold medal in the Tokyo Olympics followed by the Diamond League title in 2022 and two golds at the World Championships and Asian Games in 2023. He fell short of replicating his Tokyo Olympics feat in Paris as he settled for a silver medal while Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem bagged the gold.
Chopra’s season in 2024 saw the ace javelin thrower finish second on most occasions, including at the Doha Diamond League, the Lausanne Diamond League and the Brussels Diamond League Final.
