IND vs BAN 2nd Test: BCCI VP defends ‘permanent Test centre’ Kanpur hosting match amid ‘hue & cry’

BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla defended the decision to allow Kanpur to host IND vs BAN 2nd Test after 2 days of play were washed out due to rain

BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla has defended Kanpur hosting the rain-hit IND vs BAN 2nd Test and pointed out that the venue was one of the original permanent Test centres in the country. A lot of criticism was directed at the choice of the venue after two days of play were washed out owing to rain. Defending the decision to allow Kanpur to host the Test, Shukla explained that it had rained so much for the first time in 80 years in Kanpur, which led to the game losing two days of play.

Speaking on the sidelines of the game on Day 4, Rajeev Shukla pointed out that the Green Park stadium in Kanpur was a heritage venue that was around 80 years old. He pointed out that Kanpur was a permanent Test centre alongside Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi, Bengaluru & Mumbai, and that the whole idea was to have more Test matches played at the venue. Additionally, he pointed out that first-of-a-kind rain in 80 years had led to two days being washed out which was otherwise not the case in the past.

The history suggests that no match has been abandoned here in Kanpur. There are many venues in the world where because of the rains, matches have been abandoned. So here if for two days the match couldn’t take place, I don’t think there should be too much hue and cry,” Shukla said.

Further, Shukla pointed out that the ground was built using the available technologies back then and admitted that improvements were needed. He revealed that he had held long discussions with the government officials on how to improve the stadium and that the digging of the ground, application of new technology and more would take place over the due course of time. He added that both the BCCI and the governemt were on the same page on the matter.

The moment I came here, I had a long discussion with government officials because this stadium belongs to the government. We are in agreement with them. So, now for that, the ground has to be dug, new technology has to be applied and everything has to be done. So, immediately after coming here, I had a discussion with the authorities and they are also on the same page and I think we will be able to improve the conditions here shortly,” he added.
