Post Shakib Al Hasan era, Bangladesh name T20I squad vs India as Mehidy Hasan comes back

The first T20I between India and Bangladesh will be played in Gwalior on October 6.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced their 15-member squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against India, scheduled to begin next week. The announcement comes a day after India revealed their squad and marks the return of all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz to the shortest format. Mehidy Hasan has already made his name in the other two formats. He last played a T20I for Bangladesh back in July 2023.

BCB tribute Shakib Al Hasan

Shakib’s retirement is a significant loss for Bangladesh, and BCB Chief Selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain acknowledged the challenges of replacing such a talented player. However, Hossain expressed confidence in Mehidy’s ability to step up and fill the void left by Shakib, particularly in the batting department.

The great Shakib Al Hasan has already announced that he has played his last T20I for Bangladesh,” Hossain said. “We don’t have anyone to replace his experience and performance but we feel that Mehidy Hasan Miraz is a good batter who can handle the middle order. Mehidy can play as a batter. We didn’t pick him in the previous [T20] World Cup as we usually feel that he has a strong role as an allrounder in Tests and ODIs.”

New faces for IND vs BAN T20Is

The BCB has recalled opener Parvez Hossain Emon and left-arm spinner Rakibul Hasan to the squad. Notably, Soumya Sarkar, who was part of Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup squad earlier this year, has been left out. Emon, the wicket-keeper batter and Rakibul have both played 3 T20Is for Bangladesh and would find hard to break into the first XI, that will comprise the likes of Mahmudullah, Litton Das, Jaker Ali and skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto.
