While the much-awaited Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 retention policies finally arrived after the IPL Governing Council (GC) meeting, the BCCI also revealed the Indian squad for the three T20Is against Bangladesh. While Suryakumar Yadav will captain India, a new youngster is around the block in Mayank Yadav, who tore everyone apart, courtesy of his 150+ kmph bowling. On that note, here are the six most headline-worthy stories from September 28.

IPL 2025 UPDATES!

The IPL 2025 Mega Auction will introduce massive changes, including the return of the RTM card and the continuation of the Impact Player rule. Franchises can retain up to six players, with at least one uncapped Indian player. The auction purse has been increased to ₹120 crore. Overseas players must register for every mega auction to be eligible. Failure to register or subsequent unavailability may lead to bans.

MS DHONI – UNCAPPED – 4cr?

The IPL 2025 Mega Auction also features a rule allowing retired Indian players to be considered uncapped after five years. This could benefit CSK, who might retain MS Dhoni as an uncapped player for a reduced cost of ₹4 crore. Dhoni retired in 2019 and now he is eligible to get retained at just ₹4 crore! This rule was previously introduced but never used and was later scrapped in 2021.

Mayank Yadav fast tracked into Indian team!

Aside from all the IPL glamour, the BCCI also announced the Indian squad for the three-match T20I series against Bangladesh. One of the most interesting names from the 15-man squad is of Mayank Yadav, who rattled everyone with his extreme pace in IPL 2024. The LSG pacer is also expected to feature in the XI as there are only two other pacers in the squad (Arshdeep & Harshit Rana). Apart from this, BCCI has snubbed Ruturaj Gaikwad & Ishan Kishan. Every current Indian Test team player has also been rested.

Ban on IPL players?

The IPL Governing Council has announced a strict ban on players who register for the auction, get picked, but then become unavailable before the season starts. This move aims to address the issue of overseas players withdrawing due to workload management despite getting picked in auctions. The ban will include a two-season suspension from the IPL and future player auctions. This decision is expected to discourage such practices and ensure that selected players are committed to participating in the tournament. Many IPL franchises voiced this concern and IPL management has thus provided them the policy!

Extra money for IPL players!

Jay Shah has announced a significant pay increase for its players, starting from the upcoming IPL 2025 season. Each player will now earn an additional ₹7.5 lakh per match. This means a player who participates in all league matches can earn an impressive ₹1.05 crore on top of their regular contract amount. Each IPL franchise will now allocate a total of ₹12.6 crore exclusively for match fees throughout the season. This could be a huge boost for domestic players and talents who want to thrive at the highest level!

Unfortunate accident of Musheer Khan

Mumbai’s promising young batter, Musheer Khan, has been ruled out of the upcoming Irani Cup due to a fracture sustained in an unfortunate road accident. The incident occurred while he was traveling with his father from Kanpur to Lucknow. Khan, who had been a standout performer in domestic cricket, was expected to be a key player for Mumbai in the Irani Cup. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCQ) and BCCI medical teams are closely monitoring his recovery and will be providing necessary support.
