The upcoming IPL 2025 auction is set to be a blockbuster affair. However, a significant update has come our way and that is that teams are likely to be allowed to retain up to five players each. Moreover, the IPL franchises will also have the option to use one right-to-match (RTM) card.
IPL 2025 Retentions ‘Mega’ update
According to ESPNcricinfo, the IPL is in the process of finalizing the retention rules for the mega auction and is leaning towards approving this retention policy. Apart from this, the ten franchises are also expected to receive a hike from their previous purse size of Rs 100 crore. According to reports, the BCCI is likely to allow a purse of around Rs 115-120 to the franchises.

While these are all reports, we can expect official confirmation from the BCCI anytime soon as the Governing Council (GC) will be meeting today (28 September, Saturday) in Bengaluru. It is worth mentioning that the meeting was delayed due to a bomb threat in Bengaluru. The Taj West End Hotel received an email threat that caused a lot of panic and prompted a police investigation. However, the search of the hotel found no evidence of any danger. The IPL GC meeting, originally scheduled at the Four Seasons Hotel, was postponed as a safety precaution. The BCCI AGM will be held at the Four Seasons tomorrow (Sept 29) as well.
RTM Card returns!
If reports are to be believed, IPL will see a welcome return of the Right To Match (RTM) Card. RTM allows the teams to purchase an unretained player who played for them in the previous edition for the highest bidding amount the player has received in that auction. RTM card was last used in the IPL 2018 mega auction. BCCI skipped the RTM card in the IPL 2022 mega auction as well.
