IPL 2025 retention policy, auction date & venue to be out by September 29 – Report

The number of retention could be 3+2 where maximum three are Indians and two overseas players.

We’ll soon get clarity on the IPL retention policy for the 2025 edition. There is speculation on the number of players franchises will be allowed to retain, with reports suggesting that 5 players will be allowed to be retained and RTM (Right to Match) Cards won’t be used at the mega auction.

According to Cricbuzz, there will be an IPL Governing Council meeting today (September 28) at 6:30 PM (originally at 11:30 AM) at the Four Seasons Hotel in Bengaluru. The announcement regarding the retention policy for the IPL 2025 season will be out in 24 hours. This could very well mean that we might get to know about the retention rules today and most definitely by tomorrow.

The IPL GC meeting is taking place a day before the BCCI AGM (Annual General Meeting) takes place. All the important figures, Arun Dhumal (IPL Chairman), Jay Shah (BCCI Secretary), Ashish Shelar (BCCI Treasurer), Avishek Dalmiya, Vankina Chamundeswara Nath (ICA representative) and CM Sane, will be present for the meeting.

IPL 2025: Mega auction date & venue

The decision to call for an IPL GC seems to be last minute. There was an IPL franchise owners and BCCI office-bearers meeting in July end and it was expected that a ruling would come soon. The deadline to announce the retention policy was August end, but we are reaching October. Since it’s already too late, we might see the date and venue for the auction to be announced together with the retention rules.

The date and venue for the event are yet to be confirmed. Usually, the auction takes place in India and in December. But last year, Dubai was selected as the venue. The IPL 2025 mega auction is expected to be held outside India. Dubai, Doha, or Saudi Arabia are the names that have been floated up, and the dates will likely be November 16-17 or November 23-24.
