BCCI likely to announce IPL 2025 retention rules today, no clarity on RTM

The number of retention could be 3+2 where maximum three are Indians and two overseas players.

After a long wait, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to announce the IPL 2025 retention rules finally. With the franchise owners meeting on July 31 to discuss their ideas on the number of retentions, BCCI delayed it until the end of September. However, instead of waiting for the BCCI AGM on Sep 29, the Indian board is likely to announce that today (Sep 25) at the BCCI Apex Council Meeting. IPL 2025 Auction is set to for November-December.

Important announcements to come

  • Number of players to be retained
  • Number of Indian players in retention
  • How many foreign players are in retention?
  • Uncapped players
  • RTMs

IPL 2025 retentions

The franchises were divided on the number of retentions. While some were in favour of as many as eight players, some wanted just one player. But as InsideSport reported earlier, BCCI could settle on five players which will include three Indian players and two foreign players (3+2).

Ahead of IPL 2022 Mega Auction, existing franchises could retain four players. The retentions could include three Indians and one overseas or two Indians and two overseas or two uncapped players.

However, there is no clarity on the uncapped player rules yet ahead of IPL 2025 Auction. The total number of retained players is likely to include two uncapped players as well.

RTMs

There have been positive discussions over RTM or Right to Match card. It could allow a franchise to match the final bid price and get their player back at the auction. However, if the BCCI keeps the number of retentions to 4-5, RTM won’t make a comeback anytime soon as it defeats the purpose of the auction.

RTM has been absent since the IPL 2018 auction. However, if it does return, BCCI needs to take a call on the number of RTMs. Last time, RTM was capped to a maximum of three if the number of retentions was two. It could follow the same rule. If a franchise retains three players, they would get three RTMs or two if they retain four players.
