‘Nathan Lyon better than Ashwin, Indian spinner would have been asked to retire if he was England star’

Former England spinner Monty Panesar has triggered a debate by rating Nathan Lyon as a better bowler than Ashwin ahead of BGT 2024-25

Former England spinner Monty Panesar claimed that Australia’s Nathan Lyon was better than Ravichandran Ashwin. His remarks come after the Tamil Nadu all-rounder’s heroics in the IND vs BAN 1st Test in Chennai. Panesar claimed that Ashwin was good at playing in India while Lyon was a better bowler overall.

Panesar rates Nathan Lyon as better bowler over Ashwin

Ahead of the Lyon vs Ashwin battle in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Monty Panesar picked the Australian over his Indian counterpart. He claimed that Ashwin thought like a batter when he bowled, allowing him to exploit the weakness of the batters.

I think I see Nathan Lyon in my opinion. Yes, he is a better bowler. But I think Ashwin is a better bowler in India. I think he thinks like a batter when he bowls. He is able to pick out the weakness and he can exploit it, and that is his biggest advantage,” Panesar claimed.

Further, Panesar claimed that Ashwin would been asked to retire if he was a part of the England cricket team. He justified his statement by claiming that the Three Lions experimented more and would want young spinners coming into the fray, unlike India.

They experiment more. If Ashwin was English right now, then they would have told him to retire because they want to bring youngsters who have the potential to play. But I think England experiments more, and they like to experiment,” Panesar told IANS.

While the Australian spinner has 530 wickets to his name, Ashwin is just few wickets away from levelling scores with Lyon, with 522 wickets to his name so far. The contest between the two veterans will be a treat for the fans to watch.
