Punjab FC’s player Mushaga Bakenga aims to build schools in Punjab, shares his vision for future

Mushaga Bakenga, Punjab FC’s player, plans to build schools in Punjab, extending his philanthropic efforts to uplift communities, inspired by his work in Norway.

Punjab FC secured their second consecutive win in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season by defeating Odisha FC 2-1 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on September 20. This marked Punjab’s first-ever win over Odisha FC in the ISL, having lost both fixtures to the visitors last season. Nihal (28′) and with captain Luka Majcen is out due to injury, Norwegian international Mushaga Bakenga took over as captain.

“I want to help communities”—Bakenga

Bakenga, known for his leadership both on and off the field, has made a significant impact through his performances and his community work.

Recently awarded the prestigious Marcus Rashford Award, Bakenga’s commitment to social change has garnered attention. Reflecting on his achievement, he said, “I’ve always wanted to help others, and I feel lucky to be able to do that while playing football. I initially wanted to build a football academy in Congo, but the process was too difficult due to corruption. We soon realised that focusing on education would have a more meaningful impact. There are so many kids, especially those who’ve lost parents due to war or poverty, and they need opportunities.”

Bakenga want to do some work in Punjab

Bakenga is now working with companies in Norway to build schools over the next decade and expressed his desire to extend his philanthropic work to Punjab as well. “I want to help wherever I can. It’s all about leaving this world knowing that I’ve done my best to help as many people as possible,” he added.
