Gautam Gambhir opens up about India head coach job, tells Virat Kohli ‘never thought about it’

Gautam Gambhir's first assignment with Team India as head coach was the limited-overs against Sri Lanka.

Gautam Gambhir has to be the most high-profile appointment to the Team India coaching staff in the last few years. Of course, there was Rahul Dravid as well, but it was more of a natural succession from the U-19 Team. But, right after KKR won the IPL 2024, all rumors about Gambhir taking India job started floating.

There were a few negating it as well, but eventually the move did come about, much to the surprise of everyone. If the new India coach is to be believed, he himself wasn’t sure if he was going to be Team India coach. He didn’t even know it a couple of months back.

In a video released by the BCCI, Gambhir, in a chat with Virat Kohli revealed about the same. He said, “I never thought about it (Team India coaching). Never thought of coaching India even a couple of months back.”

Speaking further, Gambhir opened up on what propelled him to take the India job. “It is an absolute honour to represent your country once again, coming back in the dressing room..you look at the tournaments ahead like the Champions Trophy, the T20 World Cup 2026, and the World Cup 2027, so obviously you want to challenge yourself. That was one of the things, and I felt I could contribute.”

Not just that, Gambhir reserved special praise for his family, to support him in his new endeavor. “When you have a young family, two young girls waiting for you at home, staying 10 months away from the family is not easy. And you can’t do that without the support of the family,” he added.
