When two javelin champs – Neeraj Chopra and Sumit Antil competed against each other

Being a para javelin thrower, Sumit Antil has shown exceptional skill and has competed with Neeraj Chopra as well, in the past.

Who are the two most famous non-cricket sportspersons in India, one might ask? Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra is the first undoubtedly, who has won numerous championships, is a double Olympic medalist, and will be in the running to win the Diamond League Final for the second time. The, who is the other athlete. For some it is another javelin thrower, Sumit Antil, who not only has two golds at Paralymics to his name, but is also the world record hold in F64 category.

While we often don’t see such a comparison, but the accolades of Neeraj and Sumit are such, that one ought to look at some of the criteria. For starters, Neeraj has a PB of 89.94m, while Sumit Antil best distance is 73.29m. The former has an Olympic gold and a silver to his name, while Sumit has two golds. Also, both are ranked no. 1 in their categories, that only is a testimony to their greatness.

Back in 2021, in the Indian Grand Prix III in Patiala, Neeraj and Sumit competed against each other. In the eight-man competition, the latter finished seventh, with a best throw of 66.43m, while Neeraj topped the charts with a best effort of 88.07m. In that event, there were also the likes of Shivpal Singh, Sahil Silwal, Rohit Yadav, and Manu DP.
