MBSG 2-2 MCFC: Clash of giants ends in a tie as Islanders hold Mariners to stunning draw in ISL 2024-25 opener

Talk about leaving a mark in the game! Before the start of the game, all eyes were on new Mumbai City FC skipper Lallinzuala Chhangte to dance Kolkata to his tune. On the contrary, it was Mohun Bagan’s Liston Colaco who led the Islanders to dance like marionettes. The sides shared the spoils of war as Mohun Bagan squandered a 2-goal lead in the second half.

Lallinzuala Chhangte showcased his brilliance in the opening half of the game before being completely shut down by Subhasish Bose. Towards late in the second half, Chhangte took a central role but failed to bite his mark in the game.

On the other hand, it was Liston Colaco who tormented Mumbai City FC till the 70th minute of the game. He single-handedly helped Colaco open the scoring before bombarding the left flank time and again. He was often fouled by Valpuia but continued to showcase his brilliance on the pitch with his twinkle toes.

Match Summary

The Marines had a nervy start. A shot from Toral and Bipin taps it from an offside position which proved to be an early escape for the hosts. The Green and Maroon brigade opened the scoring after Subhasish laid it off to Liston. The lanky winger danced down the left flank and dribbled past a defender to lay off a strong pass. The ball hits goalie Phurba before going past him to hit Tiri and deflect back into the net.

2 minutes before the half-hour mark, the Mariners doubled their lead. Asish Rai on the right flank lobbed in a delightful cross to Greg Stewart who headed into down to Alberto Rodriguez. And the defender with deft speed put the ball into the back of the net.

In the second half, it was Mumbai City FC who dominated traffic. From a scuffle inside the box, it was the former Mariners defender who bagged the opening goal for the Islanders. Tiri fought off Subhasish to score against his ex-club.

The killer blow came in the added time of the game. It was the Syrian star Thaer Krouma who restored parity for his side. The defender ran through a pass by Noufal to put the ball into the bottom corner.
