Rafael Nadal withdraws from Laver Cup, says ‘need to do what’s best’ for Team Europe

Rafael Nadal issued a statement noting that he would not be a part of Team Europe in Laver Cup which is scheduled to begin next week

Tennis ace Rafael Nadal has pulled out from the Laver Cup tournament which is scheduled to begin in September. The Spaniard issued a statement noting that he would not be able to compete in the tournament that will take place in Berlin. Nadal explained that he intended to do what was best for Team Europe as it was a team event and that there were other players who could help the team win.

I’m really disappointed to share that I won’t be able to compete at the Laver Cup in Berlin next week. This is a team competition and to really support Team Europe, I need to do what’s best for them and at this moment there are other players who can help the team deliver the win,” Nadal said in a statement.

Nadal’s withdrawal from Laver Cup has fuelled further speculations of his retirement. The star was set to return to the tournament after a gap of two years. He was supposed to team up with Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev for Team Europe, captained by Bjorn Borg. Team Europe is yet to announce Nadal’s replacement.

While Nadal made his return from injury at the Brisbane Internationall, he hasn’t tasted success so far. He was injured in the tournament following which he missed the Australian Open. After being eliminated in the first round of the French Open, he decided to skip Wimbledon. He last competed in the Paris Olympics.
