India’s mixed doubles pair of B. Sumeeth Reddy and N. Sikki Reddy progressed to the second round (round of 16) in mixed doubles at the Hong Kong Open on Wednesday. The husband-wife duo overcame fellow Indians Tarun Kona and Sri Krishna Priya Kudaravalli in a dominant 21-9, 21-10 win, completing the match in just 22 minutes. The duo now prepares to face the eighth-seeded pair of Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jemie in the next round.
Another Indian pair in the mixed doubles category, Ashith Surya and Amrutha Pramuthesh failed to progress beyond the first round, losing to Chinese Taipei pair of M.C Lu and E Hung in straight games by 2-0 (16-21, 20-22).
Early exits for Priyanshu and Kiran in men’s singles
While the Reddy duo advanced, other Indian players did not play well. In men’s singles, Priyanshu Rajawat bowed out of the tournament after a tough 9-21, 21-16, 9-21 defeat to Japan’s Takuma Obayashi. Kiran George also lost his match in straight sets, 16-21, 16-21, to Su Li Yang of Chinese Taipei.
No success in women’s singles
In the women’s singles category, both Aakarshi Kashyap and Tanya Hemanth were knocked out in the opening round. Aakarshi lost to Japan’s fifth seed Aya Ohori 15-21, 9-21, while Tanya put up a strong fight but ultimately fell to Indonesia’s Komang Ayu Cahya Dewi 16-21, 21-26.
Indian success in Vietnam Open
Meanwhile, In another BWF tournament that is happening, Indian shuttlers showed promise at the Vietnam Open in Ho Chi Minh City. In men’s singles, Alap Mishra, Tharun Mannepalli, and Bharat Raghav all advanced to the pre-quarterfinals. Alap secured a hard-fought victory over top seed Sathish Kumar Karunakaran 21-16, 20-22, 21-13, while Tharun defeated Ting Yen-Chen of Chinese Taipei 15-21, 21-17, 21-18. Bharat also triumphed over fifth seed Meiraba Luwang Maisnam 21-19, 20-22, 21-16.
Indian women in action
In women’s singles, Isharani Baruah and Rakshitha Sree Santosh Ramraj progressed to the second round. Isharani overcame second-seed Anupama Upadhyaya 21-7, 17-21, 21-15, and Rakshitha beat sixth-seed Rachel Chan 21-13, 22-20.
More success in doubles at Vietnam Open
In mixed doubles, Indian pairs continued to shine. Top seeds Sathish Kumar Karunakaran and Aadya Variyath, along with Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto, advanced to the second round.
Bokka Navaneeth and Ritika Thaker also progressed, while second-seeded Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra moved into the second round as well. In men’s doubles, Pruthvi Krishnamurthy Roy and Vishnuvardhan Goud Panjala secured their place in the pre-quarterfinals.
