Nathan Lyon wants World Test Championship final to be a three-match series in multiple countries

Australia spinner Nathan Lyon has a unique proposition to determine the winner of the World Test Championship final

Australia spinner Nathan Lyon has a unique suggestion to improvise the World Test Championship (WTC) final. The dates for the marquee clash were unveiled by the ICC on Tuesday, with the match set to be hosted at the Lord’s from June 11, 2025. The seasoned Australia veteran is the latest to join the line of stars who have advocated for a different approach to the WTC finals and the format.

Lyon wants three-match series for WTC final

As per ICC, Lyon suggested a three-match series for the WTC final in order to determine the winner in a dominant and balanced fashion. The Australian wants one game in England, one in India and the last in Australia as a part of the series that will determine which team will lift the mace.

One thing I would like to see, I’d like to see the World Test Championship Final potentially in a three-match series. That may become a little bit better because you potentially can lose using a Test match in one session where [in a three-match series] it may allow teams to bounce back all your show their dominance and win 3-0. We’re pretty time-poor anyway and that’s going to be a challenge but that’s one thing I would change,” Nathan Lyon said.

Lyon will enjoy a long break until November when Australia take on India in their next Test assignment in the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He is most likely to take part in the Sheffield Sheild, just like other senior players including skipper Pat Cummins and Steve Smtih. The BGT 2024-25 will commence from November 22 onwards and will go on till early January 2025.
