Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 auction has most buzz in the town. Franchises are brainstroming each day to select the players to get retained. These five players will be risky retention for the teams in IPL 2025.
KL Rahul
Speculation is growing around KL Rahul’s future with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). There are rumors that the franchise might either release him or retain him, but likely not as captain. Rahul had a decent IPL 2024 season, scoring 520 runs at an average of 37.14, but his captaincy came under scrutiny as LSG finished in seventh place.
His retention poses a tricky decision for the team. While they may consider keeping him as a batter, his leadership role is uncertain. Additionally, Rahul has not played international T20 cricket since 2022, and his current form isn’t particularly strong. Retaining him would also come at a high cost, as his IPL price is around Rs 17 crore, which LSG would have to allocate from their auction budget.

Mohammed Shami
Mohammed Shami, who plays for the Gujarat Titans in the IPL, missed the previous season due to surgery. KKR now faces a decision on whether to retain him for the upcoming season. Since the ODI World Cup, Shami has been out of action, making it a bit risky to retain him given the lack of matches he may play before the IPL auction.
Ishan Kishan
Ishan Kishan could be another risky retention for Mumbai Indians (MI). Although he is one of captain Hardik Pandya’s favorites and might be retained by the team, his recent form hasn’t been at its best, and his performance last year was also below expectations.
