What if Virat Kohli becomes UK citizen? Will he play IPL as overseas player?

Virat Kohli can play as a foreign player in the Indian Premier League (IPL). How and why? Read this article to find out.

Virat Kohli is a premier player in the Indian Premier League (IPL), proudly representing India, playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore. However, there are rumours that Kohli might acquire British citizenship, as he plans to move to London for the foreseeable future. If the Indian star decides to settle in the UK, questions arise about whether he would continue playing as an Indian player in the IPL. Let’s explore the possibilities of this potential scenario and its implications.

According to reports, Virat Kohli has already moved to London with his family, spending most of their time in England and only visiting India for matches and work-related commitments. Although they have not yet applied for UK citizenship, there is a possibility that they could opt for dual citizenship in the future.

Is Virat Kohli moving to London permanently?

King Kohli had hinted that he might move out of India after his retirement, stating that he will not be seen for a while after retiring.

“Once I’m done, I’ll be gone; you won’t see me for a while,” Virat said in an interview.

Virat and Anushka also welcomed their second child, Akaay Kohli, in London, as they spend most of their time there.

Will he play IPL as overseas player?

There’s a possibility that Kohli could participate in the Indian Premier League as a foreign player if he decides to take British citizenship. Although dual citizenship is allowed for British citizens, India does not permit dual citizenship, meaning Kohli would have to surrender his Indian passport if he opts for it. As a result, Virat would have to play as a foreign player in the IPL if he relocates.

RCB would need to use one of their foreign player slots to retain Virat Kohli if they want him to continue playing for their team.

While Virat is likely to move out of India eventually, it won’t be immediate, as he has 3-4 more years of playing for the national team. However, if he were to take British citizenship sooner, he would no longer be eligible for the Indian squad.
