India make history, secure first-ever Asian Games quotas in Surfing

As the country continues to develop its surfing infrastructure and talent, there is a strong possibility of Indian surfers competing at the highest level of international surfing, including the Olympic Games.

Indian surfing has achieved a historic milestone, securing its first-ever quotas for the Asian Games 2026. This accomplishment is a result of the outstanding performances of Indian surfers at the Asian Surfing Championships 2024, which served as a qualifier for the prestigious continental event.

Landmark Achievement in Indian Surfing

The Indian team, comprising eight surfers competing in four categories, earned one quota each for men and women based on their impressive performances and ranking points accumulated during the championships.

Kishore Kumar stellar Performance

Kishore Kumar, a promising young surfer, narrowly missed out on a place in the final of the junior category. Despite facing stiff competition from some of Asia’s best surfers, Kishore’s consistent performances throughout the tournament showcased his exceptional talent.

Harish Muthu notable achievement

Harish Muthu, another Indian surfer, made history by becoming the first Indian to qualify for the quarterfinals of the Asian Surfing Championships. Although he fell short in the end, his achievement is a testament to the growing strength of Indian surfing.

Surfing Federation of India releases statement

Speaking on the historic day for Indian Surfing, Mr. Arun Vasu, President, Surfing Federation of India, said, “It’s truly heartening to witness this historic day when Indian surfing has secured quotas for the upcoming Asian Games. This achievement is a testament to the hard work and determination of our surfers, coaches, and the federation over the years. I am confident that we will also see our surfers competing in the Olympics in the future. While it would have been the icing on the cake if Kishore had made it to the finals today, we are still incredibly proud of him, considering his age, talent, and unwavering determination.”

India’s success at the Asian Surfing Championships 2024 is a significant step forward for the sport in the country. It demonstrates the dedication and hard work of Indian surfers and coaches, and it bodes well for the future of surfing in India.
